This
course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide
you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your
questions. The instructor for this course will be Scott Jernigan.
With
a Master of Arts degree in Medieval History, Scott Jernigan feels as
much at home in the musty archives of London as he does in the warm
glow of a computer monitor. Scott teaches A+ Certification and PC
hardware classes around the country, including several stints at the
FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, Lucent Technologies in Baltimore, MD, and
the United Nations in New York City. Scott has also edited numerous
computer books, including the best-selling "All in One A+ Certification
Exam Guide" and the "Network+ Certification Exam Guide" from
McGraw-Hill. Practicing what he teaches, Scott is an A+ and Network+
Certified Technician.

Requirements:
A
solid conceptual and practical knowledge of Windows 2000 or XP and
preferably some experience with Windows 98 or ME; Internet access,
e-mail, the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Web browser,
and the Adobe Flash and PDF plug-ins
(two free and simple downloads you obtain at
http://www.adobe.com/downloads by clicking Get Adobe Flash Player and
Get Adobe Reader). It's also recommended that you have a PC
that you can take apart and put back together again. This can be
anything from an ancient Intel 286 to a newer 486 or beyond. Because of
the dangers of electro-static discharge
(to the machine, not the student), we do not require you to tear apart
your own primary computer. This is, however, a class that trains you to
be a hardware technician - having a machine to play with greatly helps
your learning.

Student Reviews:
"Although I didn't have/take the time to enter into the
discussions, it was helpful and amusing to "listen" to the others. This
class was just what I needed with my busy schedule. It allowed me the
freedom to set my own time and not have to bother with getting to
class. I felt like it was structured yet flexible. Although I was out
with a cold for a week, I still had enough time to catch up and take
the final exam. I believe that the instructor is very well versed in
his field."
"Excellent course. I have been working with PCs and
"pre-PCs" since 1980. I was not sure how useful this course would be to
me. I was pleasantly surprised - I feel I have enhanced my knowledge
and look forward to more advanced A+ courses. However the quizzes could
be longer and somewhat more difficult. Great Job Scott!"
"From a complete beginner standpoint--an excellent way to
step into the subject--material presented is clear and reinforced.
Discussion areas were entertaining and informative, especially the
reports covering the lab computer assignments. Learned some basics(will
never forget) and know exactly which lessons need further review/study!
Enjoyed the course!"
"great class it was very easy to understand because of the way the lessons were laid out."
"Great class. My first time doing an on-line class. I
certainly will no longer hesitate to take another. Thank you very much
for a good first time experience."
"I did not take this course in order to become a computer
technician. I an looking to switch careers from annotator of economics
books to tech writer. I am forty years old and, before the class, knew
less than my kids about computers. Your writing style calmed my fears
about wandering into the forest of technobabble. Whenever my brain
froze up in fear, the next section contained a little cartoon picture
of components talking out loud. This gave me courage to proceed. To
this aspiring tech writer--you are a role model!"
"I enjoyed Scott's presentation in-lesson and on the message
boards. He seems genuinely interested in helping us learn and grow in
knowledge. Though I was annoyed by some typos/lack of clarity, I look
forward to the next course."
"I have been tweaking computers on my own for the past eight
years;learning as I go. The knowledge I gained through this class was
invaluable. The lesson assignments were right on target. The
information was clear and precise. I am anticipating the Intermediate
course with fervent optimism."
"I have never had so much fun taking a class as I have with
this one. I'm extremely happy with the way it turned out and I feel
I've learned more from this than I ever could've on my own. Thanks for
everything and see you in the Intermediate course"
"I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge with
me. I really enjoyed this course. Although it was tough for me at times
I learned a lot. I now have a better understanding of what really goes
on inside the computer. Thanks again. Sarah Dobies"
"I loved this class and I learned a lot. The course went at
a great pace, the instructor was funny and helpful. The discussion area
was especially helpful. Can't wait for Intermediate. Thanks Scott!"
"I loved this class! Very informative. Would recommend to anyone wanting to prepare for the A+ Exam."
"Instructor has a very charming pleasant attitude with a
great sense of humor. He is a good writer. And he is responsive and
helpful. :)"
"I really love the writing style of my instructor! He makes
it so easy to understand things - even if you are somewhat new to
computers!"
"I thoroughly enjoyed this course and the wit of Scott.
Being more of the programmer than the tech, this course offered
insights into the tech terms I have often heard but was not able to put
a 'name to the face'. Thank you for making it simpler to understand."
"I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was offered in a manner I could easily handle. Thank you!"
"I truly enjoyed the course. I learned more about the PC
than I thought I knew. The course also helped to refresh my knowledge
of the hardware."
"I very much enjoyed it. Looking foward to the intermediate course"
"I will continue to take the rest of the series because I
enjoyed this course so much. My favorite questions on the quizzes were
about technical issues such as the problems Brad, Steve and the others
encountered installing something new to their systems. They really made
me think."
"I would definitely recommend this course! The instructor explained the material in detail and made it fun to learn."
"Thanks for another great course. I have recommended your
courses to many of my colleagues and I know that they are presently
pursuing signing up for this."
"Thank you for this class, I hope to take more classes.
Great Online teaching method you have. The website was always working
great !"
"Thank you. I learned a lot of info from this course and hope to put it to good use soon."
"Thank you Scott - The course was well organized, with clear easy to follow instructions. I enjoyed your sense of humour!"
"The class was outstanding and Scott is a wonderful
instructor. I look forward to continuing the online classes and I will
tell everyone I know how great and user friendly the online classes are
to those who choose to use them! Thanks for the opportunity!"
"The lectures were extremely well written and easy to
understand. I commend the instructor on both the material oranization
and his writing style."
"This course is the first I have come to know HOW it all
comes together. Wish I'd done this a long time ago. The course would
benefit anyone that is half way technically inclined or just curious,
and has a PC at home to maintain."
"This is my 3rd course with Scott as instructor. I like the
fact that he will throw a curve in once in awhile to make you think
instead of feeding you all the answers."
"This was my third online computer course and I think it was
the best course as far as material presented and exactly what I was
looking for in understanding computer operations."
"Thoroughly enjoyed the course, it definitely opened my eyes to new PC terms and concepts... Thanks"
